Sri Lanka is a small country situated in South Asia closed to India. The area of the country is 65610 square kilo meters. The total population of the country is about 20 million. .(Statistical Abstract -2008 Department of Census and Statistics) The cultural and documentary heritage of Sri Lanka trace back to about 2500 years. Mahavansa is the great chronicle which includes the recorded history in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan culture consists of various religious beliefs, rituals, customs, traditional ceremonies and folk lore which trace back to more than 2,500 years. This has been revealed by archeological explorations. Majority of the Sri Lankans live in rural villagers and there are many rituals and customs are related to their religion and some are related to various diseases. Some rituals are performed to cure the diseases. Some rituals are related to various events of their lives such as birth, marriage, puberty, death and agricultural activities. Several ethnic communities such as Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgers, and Malay live in Sri Lanka. The majority community is Sinhalese. Main religion is Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, are the other religions. The country is divided into nine provinces. In Northern and Eastern provinces, Tamils are the majority community.
