Acquisition Policy
According to the Acquisition Policy priority is given to the following areas.
- Publications published in Sri Lanka.
- Publications on Sri Lanka, published in foreign countries.
- Publications by Sri Lankans published in foreign countries.
- General reference sources.
- Other reference sources which are especially needed for research but cannot afford to purchase
by other libraries (Secondary sources). - Publications pertaining to Library and Information Science.
- Main books on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam.
- Deposit copies of Sri Lankan publications received under the Printers and Publishers Ordinances
of 1885 and 1839 (amended in 1976). - Books relevant to SAARC region.
- Ola-leaf manuscripts and rare books.
- Collections of eminent scholars.
- Electronic databases.

National Library Catalogue
The catalogue is prepared using KOHA software to compile bibliographic information about the publication collection of the National Library of Sri Lanka and make it searchable online. National Library has a vast collection of library materials in the form of print, audio-visual and electronic media. The collection which is of a high standard both qualitative and quantitative reflects the objectives of the National Library and the needs of the users. The National Library collection currently comprises of twenty seven (27) collections. The current book stock of approximately over 500 000 volumes will form the nucleus of the future national collection.

National Digital Library
Information communication technology has revolutionized the concept of library. Each and every library is slowly digitized. Taking into consideration the modern world trend in library and information field, National Library and Documentation Services Board has taken steps to initiate a National Digital Library and Repository. The objective of the National Digital Library and Repository is to collect and maintain digital resources in the country and provide digital information to the reader community. The National Digital Library and Repository was inaugurated by Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Minister of Education on 25 may 2016 in conjunction with the 26th anniversary of the National Library of Sri Lanka.

National Union Catalogue
The National Virtual Union Catalogue of Sri Lanka serves as a centralized portal, enabling users to search and browse bibliographic records from libraries across the country. Currently, it integrates the catalogues of 25 public libraries, alongside the National Library of Sri Lanka.
Through this platform, users can conveniently search for specific book details and determine their availability in participating libraries. Furthermore, the site offers real-time updates on the status of books, ensuring accurate and timely information for its users.
The NL invites all libraries to become part of the Virtual Union Catalogue (VUC), a platform designed to benefit the entire nation. Following libraries are currently incorporated into the VUC. Libraries interested in joining the VUC are encouraged to contact the Bibliographic Control Division of the NLDSB for further details.

National Bibliography
The Sri Lanka National Bibliography is a monthly publication that includes publications published in Sri Lanka in all three languages including Sinhala, Tamil and English, Publications about Sri Lanka published in foreign countries and bibliographic information on publications published by Sri Lankans abroad. It can also be introduced as the only authoritative publication that contains bibliographic information on publications published in Sri Lanka.
1. National Bibliography of Sri Lanka (current publishing)
This catalogue, compiled by the Department of National Archives in 1962, has been continuously published by the National Library and Documentation Services Board of Sri Lanka since 1973. The forthcoming publications in the Sri Lanka National Bibliography, which has been
published monthly since the summer of 1994, are included in a separate section. Bibliographic information on printed publications, audiovisual media, the first printing of a newspaper, the first issue of a periodical, unpublished degree theses, etc., is included in the
National Bibliography.
2. Publication of the National Bibliography of Sri Lanka (Retrospective)
Compilation of the retrospective Sri Lanka National Bibliography is another important project launched by the National Library in 1991. The project has undertaken to compile Bibliographic information published in Sri Lanka from 1737, when printing began in Sri Lanka, to 1962.

National Library indexes are specialized tools designed to provide access to the collective intellectual and cultural output of a country. Unlike a standard library index, which might only cover a single collection, a National Library often maintains indexes that span the entire nation’s publications.
Sri Lanka Periodical Article Index
This series is compiled quarterly, including bibliographic details of articles published in periodicals (Sinhala,Tamil and English) published in Sri Lanka.
Theses and Dissertations Index
A national index of all postgraduate research conducted at the country’s universities
