The National Library of Sri Lanka, as the apex institution for reference and research in the country, plays a pivotal role in the systematic collection, preservation, and dissemination of both published and unpublished information resources of Sri Lanka. In fulfilling its national mandate, the National Library of Sri Lanka ensures equitable access to information for all citizens, while making a significant contribution to the development and standardization of library and information services across the nation.

In addition, the National Library of Sri Lanka undertakes a wide range of functions comparable to those of national libraries worldwide, including the compilation and publication of the National Bibliography of Sri Lanka. Established in 1990, the National Library of Sri Lanka proudly marks its 36th anniversary this year.

The 36th Anniversary Celebration of the National Library of Sri Lanka will be held on 28th April 2026 at 9:00 a.m. at the National Library Auditorium, under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, with the participation of the Secretary to the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Mr. Prince Senadheera, along with other distinguished dignitaries. The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Gamini Senanayake, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna. On this occasion, the National Library Research Award – 2025 will also be conferred in recognition of outstanding research and innovative contributions to the field of Library and Information Science. This award acknowledges the work of researchers and professionals who have made significant contributions during the period 2023–2025.
