Grading of Libraries According to National Standards
Under the National Library and Documentation Services Board Act, the National Library and Documentation Services Board (NLDSB) is responsible for establishing standards for
libraries operating in Sri Lanka and grading libraries in accordance with those standards.
In evaluating libraries against the prescribed standards, particular attention is given to the library building and facilities, library resources, collection management, and financial
resources. In addition, due consideration is given to the quality and range of services provided by the library.
Based on these criteria, libraries applying for grading are classified into four grades:
- Grade III
- Grade II
- Grade I
- Supra Grade
Formulation of Library Standards
The NLDSB is responsible for developing, reviewing, and updating standards for public,school, departmental, and special libraries in Sri Lanka.
The following library grading standards are available:
Evaluation and Grading of Libraries
The NLDSB provides ongoing professional advice and guidance on library development and conducts the evaluation and grading of libraries in accordance with the prescribed standards.
Libraries seeking to obtain a grading evaluation report are required to pay the applicable fee according to the grade for which they are applying:
- Grade I / Supra Grade - Rs. 10,000.00
- Grade II - Rs. 8,000.00
- Grade III - Rs. 5,000.00
Libraries seeking to be graded must meet the standards prescribed for the respective grade. Following the evaluation and grading process, an official grading certificate will be issued. The cost of framing the certificate, where applicable, will be charged separately in addition to the evaluation fee.
Application for Library Grading
Libraries wishing to obtain a grading evaluation should submit a formal request and pay the applicable evaluation fee for the desired grade.
Payments made by cheque should be drawn in favour of:
